How to revive your wig?

Updated: Aug 8, 2021

Getting a new human hair wig is exciting. However, without the right hair care maintenance, your beautiful human hair wig can start to become dull and faded with time. Whether you have a human hair wig or a synthetic wig, your wig will likely experience the same issues of frizz and tangles if you don't care for it. If your human hair wig has become frizzy or very tangled and you don't know what to do with it, don't throw it away! The big question is, how do you revive a tangling or frizzy human hair wig?

The great news is that you can bring your human hair wig back to life and make it look brand new again. You don't have to throw out your wig just because it has gotten frizzy or tangled. Simply follow these simple steps to renew your old human hair wig and make it look fresh and beautiful again.

STEP 1: UNTANGLE YOUR WIG

People with curly hair wigs frequently face the issue of tangling. So, what do you do to solve this issue? This very first step to take is to use your fingers to comb through the hair and gently separate any large knots. Next, place the wig on a mannequin or wig stand and secure it with hair clips or T-pins. To make this process much easier, spritz a little detangling spray onto the wig. Next, use a detangling brush or a wide-toothed comb to gently comb through the hair. Comb the hair gently starting from the ends and gradually move upwards. Note that you should comb the hair very softly to prevent excess shedding and breakage. Don't brush too forcefully, as this could make the human hair wig even more tangled than before. As soon as your human hair wig has been detangled, move on to the next step. You are free to style your hair, depending on your choice. To keep the hair strands in place, finish up with a lightweight hairspray.

STEP 2: WASH IT WITH A MILD SHAMPOO

After wearing your wig for a long time, you may discover that it starts to look dry and frizzy. When this occurs, washing the hair with a mild shampoo and hair conditioner can be a good solution. We recommend that you also apply a leave-in conditioner (it acts as a detangler conditioner) afterward to make the hair easy to brush.

To wash your human hair wig, firstly follow step one of brushing your wig out. Next, fill a sink with lukewarm water. Add some shampoo into the water and swirl it around. You will notice the shampoo foaming up once you mix it with water. Now, dip your wig into the sink and use your fingers to massage the strands. Concentrate more on the tangled areas. Let the wig sit in the water for up to 5 minutes. After, rinse the wig with clean water. Then, apply a conditioner to the hair and let it sit for up to 10 minutes. Then rinse off the hair. Lastly, comb the wig gently with a wide-tooth comb and at the same time, apply a leave-in conditioner to the hair.

STEP 3: RESTORE IT'S MOISTURE

Human wigs are designed to look very natural. However, human hair wigs are different from our own hair. Wigs are not able to get the natural oil or sebum from the scalp as your natural hair does. So, wigs are more vulnerable to tangling and frizz if they are not kept hydrated and nourished. If you wear human hair wigs daily, it is even more advised that you keep it moist and in good condition.

So, what is the solution to this? The most important step here is to keep your wig hydrated. So, make sure to apply leave-in conditioners or hair oils to your wig often, and spend time deep conditioning it when you wash it. Aside from adding moisture to the human hair, make sure you use a heat protectant on your wig while styling and store it well.

STEP 4: TRIM THE AFFECTED AREAS

As a last resort for a tangled or frizzy human hair wig, you can get it trimmed by a hairstylist to remove the dry or affected areas. If there is no other way you can fix your frizzy or ratty wig, trimming and snipping the affected areas is worth a try. Don't just throw your wig away before you've tried this step. Take your wig to a hair salon or a trusted hairstylist, so they can trim off the dry ends and cut off any unwanted strands to make your wig beautiful again.

By giving your human hair wig the proper hair care maintenance it needs, your wig will stay healthier for longer and will be less likely to experience tangling and dryness. Taking care of your wig is more convenient than trying to restore it to its original state. When your human hair wig is not in use, make sure to store it properly. Store your wig safely, where there is no dust or dirt and it is out of children's reach. Although, if your wig does become tangled, it is not difficult to bring it back to its luscious locks by following the steps previously mentioned. Just make sure to shampoo, brush, condition, and style it when necessary.
